No.2 Fucheng Road, Haidian District, Beijing, in the center of the courtyard. The warm sunshine is scattered on an antique cornice building. There are two gold-plated bronze lions and three round red lanterns hanging high in front of the door. Two foreigners and four ladies in uniform walked across the sloping stone road in front of the building.
This is the 18th building of Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, which was once described as "very sensitive" and known as the "presidential building". On days when there are no foreign heads of state staying, as long as you have the opportunity to enter Diaoyutai, you can come to this building to take photos at close range.
Receive 1,200 foreign heads of state and government
Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, which belongs to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, enjoys the reputation of "the first pavilion in the East", with lush grass and a lake, 16 reception buildings and an ancient architectural complex scattered. Since its establishment 48 years ago, it has received more than 1,200 foreign heads of state and government.
As the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China approaches, people naturally think of Diaoyutai, a garden-style hotel that has witnessed the strengthening of China’s diplomacy and the changeable situation. In September 1959, on the eve of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the founding of New China, when the Diaoyutai opened, the first distinguished guests were all heads of socialist countries. Nowadays, China has friends all over the world, and the guests at Diaoyutai are "global". On August 23rd last year, Diaoyutai welcomed the 1,000th foreign head of state or government, which increased by more than 200 in just over a year.
Some "classic" events that happened here are remarkable; There are countless anecdotes, which are widely circulated.
In February, 1972, US President Nixon made a historic "ice-breaking trip" to China. He had meetings and talks with President Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai. The hotel is Diaoyutai Building 18. Above the banquet, Nixon showed off his "chopstick skills" that he had practiced for more than half a year. Previously, when Kissinger secretly visited China to "pave the way", he lived in Building 6 not far away.
In September, 1982, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher visited China and stayed in Building 12 of Diaoyutai. From here, she went to the Great Hall of the People to meet Deng Xiaoping and fell on the steps in front of the Great Hall. In the 1980s, Sino-British and Sino-Portuguese negotiations on the future of Hong Kong and Macao and the normalization of Sino-Soviet relations were also held at Diaoyutai.
In December 1999, president Jiang Zemin met Yeltsin in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, who was visiting China for the last time as Russian President. They walked together in the garden, leaving many rare and relaxed pictures. Prior to that, in 1992, China and South Korea signed a communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations in Fangfeiyuan, Building 17 after negotiations.
Since August 2003, the six-party talks that attracted worldwide attention have been held in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. After twists and turns, a breakthrough was finally achieved this year, and the "213" joint document was adopted. On the evening of the 3rd of this month, the second phase of the sixth round of the Six-Party Talks issued a joint document on the second phase of the implementation of the Joint Statement. President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao paid close attention to the Six-Party Talks and listened to the reports of Chinese officials at the first time.
"Very political" has become "very economic"
Diaoyutai State Guesthouse is located in the ancient Diaoyutai Scenic Area in the western suburbs of Beijing. It used to be the palace for emperors to rest, and it was known as the "Diaoyutai of the Emperor".
Since the 1960s, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China leaders, such as Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi and Zhou Enlai, sometimes come to Diaoyutai State Guesthouse to hold meetings or temporarily stay and work.
During the "Cultural Revolution", the "Central Cultural Revolution Group" worked in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, and some members such as Jiang Qing stayed. During that time, it was "very political" here, and Diaoyutai was regarded as a political symbol by Beijing residents.
Since 1978, China leaders have stopped staying at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Only meetings, talks, banquets and other major foreign affairs activities are held here. With the transformation of units, self-financing and "moderate opening", Diaoyutai, which has entered the ranks of five-star hotels, has become "very economical". A few days ago, when a reporter went to interview a press conference of the International Trade Fair with an invitation and a car license bearing the words Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, he found that there was a Diaoyutai boutique display in the lobby of Building 6, with everything from cigarettes, wine and antique porcelain. The price of "Diaoyutai brand cigarettes" was 600 yuan each. The small pencil provided by the organizer is also marked with the words dedicated to Diaoyutai. The subsidized Diaoyutai working meal with two dishes and one soup has also increased from two yuan a decade ago to ten yuan.
50,000 dollars including property price, money can’t do everything.
Various official and business activities have attracted more and more entrepreneurs and social people to the Diaoyutai, which is guarded by the armed police.
In an interview with this reporter, the head of the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse Administration said that since the reform and opening up, Diaoyutai has gradually expanded the scope of external reception. In addition to receiving foreign heads of state and dignitaries, it also receives business guests. Every year, many enterprises, including the world’s top 500 enterprises, hold various large-scale business activities in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
According to reports, Building 18 has received several high-self-funded delegations before, and the inclusive price is $50,000 a day. Of course, "money is not everything", and you still need to meet certain conditions when you stay in the 18th and 12th buildings of Diaoyutai.
Many people take advantage of business banquets, or "spend a lot of money" to go to Diaoyutai to eat and watch the scenery. A netizen who once went to a building in Diaoyutai for dinner said: "Like the Great Hall of the People, there are food labels here. The waiter is so beautiful and excellent, the decoration is first-class and the service is first-class. The taste of the food has been overshadowed by the above, and it feels good! "
Figures provided by Diaoyutai State Guesthouse show that the museum receives more than 70,000 people for dinner every year. The team of chefs is huge. At present, there are more than 10 senior technicians, nearly 100 technicians and more than 200 cooks, who can cook hundreds of distinctive national banquets.
Outside the east wall of Diaoyutai, there is a ginkgo forest. Every late autumn, the leaves turn yellow and spread all over the floor. According to word of mouth, this place has become another scene besides the "Red Leaves of Xiangshan", and many Beijing residents rushed to take photos.
"In November of the year before last, I took a group of photos for my girlfriend there, which was very beautiful. I hope that the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse will be more open to the people, so that we can go in if we are not too rich. " Mr. Wang, who works in an office in Beijing, told reporters like this. (End)
